William “Billy” Hart
1885 - 1943
Billy was the first Australian-born person to fly an aircraft solo in Australia, near Penrith, NSW in 1911 and gained Australia’s first pilot’s licence, Aviator’s Certificate No. 1, issued by the Aerial League of Australia on 5 December 1911.
Billy taught himself to fly, an impressive feat at a time when aviation was still in its experimental stages. His aircraft was a Box kite-style aircraft built by the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company (later known as Bristol). Billy competed in early air races and exhibitions which helped establish aviation as a serious and promising field in the eyes of the public and investors.
During the First World War, Hart served with the Australian Flying Corps, further contributing to the development of aviation skills and standards in a military context.
Billy Hart’s courage and tenacity helped demonstrate the viability of flight in Australia and inspired the public and policymakers alike.
